What is HEPA filtration?

HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filtration is a mechanical filter standard that captures 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns, commonly used in air scrubbers and vacuums during mold remediation and water damage restoration.

HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air. The standard requires filters to capture at least 99.97% of particles measuring 0.3 microns or larger as they pass through the filter material. This level of performance matters in water damage and mold work because mold spores, dust, and other contaminants released during cleanup can spread through a building if not contained.

HEPA filters are built into two main types of equipment used by Charleston-area restoration contractors. Air scrubbers (portable units that continuously cycle room air through the filter) run HEPA filters as a final stage to pull spores out of the air in work zones. HEPA-equipped vacuums capture particles at the source when technicians remove contaminated drywall, insulation, or wet materials, preventing those particles from becoming airborne.

Without HEPA filtration, the act of handling mold-damaged materials can actually spread spores to unaffected areas of a structure. Because mold spores are microscopic and remain suspended in air for hours, the 0.3-micron capture standard ensures that most spores get trapped rather than recirculated into living spaces or other parts of the building. Restoration professionals use HEPA equipment as part of containment strategy during mold remediation work to protect both the workspace and the property itself.
