What is negative air pressure?
Negative air pressure is a containment technique that removes air from a sealed zone through HEPA filtration to prevent mold spores and other contaminants from escaping into clean areas during remediation.
During water damage restoration and mold remediation, restoration crews establish temporary containment barriers around affected zones. Negative air pressure equipment maintains that containment by drawing air out of the sealed space and forcing it through HEPA filters before exhaust. This creates lower pressure inside the barrier than in surrounding areas, so any air naturally flows inward rather than leaking outward.
The process works by placing a negative air machine (also called an air scrubber) at the containment perimeter. The machine pulls air continuously, filtering particles like mold spores, dust, and other biological contaminants before releasing clean air outside. This prevents cross-contamination of unaffected rooms and protects occupants and workers from exposure to airborne hazards.
